Paula Gately Tillman's Fringe features black and white darkroom photography that gives a rare and often never-before-seen glimpse into fashion, drag and music scenes, as well as other underground subcultures of New York and Atlanta from 1984 to 1997. Fringe was printed in a limited run of 350 individual books and 200 clamshell, special artist editions, which include Fringe, a companion book Nostalgia, and a signed digital print. The ephemera and personal photos that are included in Nostalgia supplement and enrich the narrative and photos of Fringe. Photo subjects include the American Music Show, Dick Richards, Tish and Snooky Bellomo (Manic Panic), Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey (World of Wonder), Michael Musto (Village Voice), Brant Mewborn (Rolling Stone), John Kelly (performance artist), and Nelson Sullivan, in addition to legendary drag performers such as RuPaul, Jayne County, Lady Bunny, Joey Arias —and others. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Paula Gately Tillman

Paula Gately Tillman is a photographer from Baltimore, Maryland. Gately Tillman is most well known for her 1980s and 1990s work in New York and Atlanta, docu-menting underground scenes and fringe personalities. Her photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is represented in numerous public and private collections, including the permanent collection at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Downtown Collection at New York University’s Fales Library, and the LGBT Collection in the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library at Emory University. Paula studied photography in Aspen, Colorado, under the guidance of internationally published photographer Eileen Lewis and moved to New York to take classes at the School of Visual Arts as well as pursue a career in photography. It was in 1984 that she met Brant Mewborn, then senior editor of Rolling Stone, who introduced her to the thriving scene of musicians, drag queens, and other collaborators that she would later photograph. During her combined time in New York and Atlanta, her subjects included The American Music Show, RuPaul, Michael Musto, Tish and Snooky Bellomo, Wigstock, John Kelly, Lady Bunny, Nelson Sullivan, Dick Richards, Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Phoebe Legere, and others. Paula Gately Tillman is the widow of LeRoy E. Hoffberger, attorney, art collector, author, and philanthropist. She currently lives and works in Baltimore.
