ABOUT THE BOOK

The materials found in this edition can be used in conjunction with Etude Edition Series: Scales & Arpeggios: Preparatory Exercises. This edition systematically introduces selected technical exercises from Preparatory Exercises, Opus 16 by Aloys Schmitt (1788–1866) followed by all exercises from Part 1 of The Virtuoso Pianist by Charles-Louis Hanon (1819–1900). The selected Opus 16 exercises rarely extend beyond five-finger patterns, and are shortened, making them accessible to the pianist with medium to small hands. They are the perfect precursor to Hanon’s The Virtuoso Pianist, Part 1. The Hanon exercises are continue the development of agiility, independence, strength, and perfect evenness in the fingers. Exercises are notated to appear easier and shortened for accessibility.
