ABOUT THE BOOK

A Monarch’s Northbound Odyssey Monarch Butterfly Chronicles From a mountain in Mexico where a million wings cling to ancient oyamel firs, one butterfly named Jacquie awakens with a single, wordless certainty: north. She carries no map and no memory of the places she will find—only a compass behind her eyes, a hunger for milkweed, and a dream of open sky. Across the dry valleys of northern Mexico, over the wide silver of the Rio Grande, through the bluebonnet hills of Texas and into the cypress-scented air of Louisiana, she follows that ancient pull. Along the way she discovers gardens planted with deliberate care, humans who move gently among the stems with soft brushes and jars, and the quiet miracle of eggs left on the undersides of leaves—tiny vessels carrying the entire journey forward. Told in Jacquie’s own voice, A Monarch’s Northbound Odyssey is a lyrical, deeply observed story of migration, endurance, and legacy. Rooted in the real biology and seasonal rhythms of the monarch butterfly, it is both an intimate adventure and a quiet love letter to every gardener who has ever planted milkweed and watched the sky. The chain does not begin with us. It does not end with us. We are only the link that is alive right now. Flutter and float.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hugh Pinckard

Hugh Pinckard is a self-taught and self-proclaimed “lepidopterist,” (a person who studies or specializes in butterflies and moths, which belong to the order Lepidoptera in entomology). He is a father and grandfather as well as a lover of all things out- doors: gardening, landscape design, wildlife observation, camping, fishing, hiking, and many more activities. Thus, his progression to the cause of the monarch butterfly is an easy and logical step. Upon learning of the predicament that has engulfed pollinators - specifically the monarch butterfly - he launched himself into the cause of “Rescue, Raise, and Release” of the monarchs. He attended a Monarch Watch symposium at the University of Kansas, where he established friendships with and enlisted the assistance of the Monarch Watch (MonarchWatch.org) staff. To date, he has released well over two thousand (2,000) healthy monarch butterflies back into the wild and is listed as a Monarch Watch “Certified Waystation” and a National Wildlife Federation “Certified Wildlife Habitat.” He is the author of Rescue, Raise, and Release: Create Your Own Monarch Butterfly Experience.
