ABOUT THE BOOK

My Anxiety Made Me reframes anxiety as a competitive edge rather than a condition to be managed. Drawing from 25 years of experience as a professional athlete, Pentagon advisor, and Hall of Fame coach, Shaun Spencer shows readers how to read the signals anxiety sends, redirect them into performance, and use what they have always seen as a weakness as the sharpest advantage they have.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shaun Spencer

Shaun Spencer is the founder of Spencer Performance Institute and the author of My Anxiety Made Me. He is a former Nike and Adidas-sponsored professional athlete who trained for the 2008 Olympics, a Pentagon Strategic Advisor with nearly a decade of service working alongside three-star generals, and a Hall of Fame Division II coach who led Bowie State University to its first-ever CIAA Indoor Track Championship. Between the Pentagon and the work he does today, there was a season nobody saw. A career-ending injury, depression and alcoholism, and a stretch in Los Angeles where he was living out of his car, counting change on the side of the road. What rebuilt him was not therapy or a twelve-step program. Shaun compiled all of his elite mental training, military experience, his background in psychology, his experience creating champions, and used that to rebuild his life. He learned to read the signals within his anxiety attacks and use them to improve his life. That discovery is what My Anxiety Made Me is built on. Shaun works with students, athletes, executives, and organizations, helping them stop fighting their anxiety and start using it. He lives with anxiety and ADHD and has spent 25 years building the systems that turned both into competitive advantages. This book is the clearest version of everything he has learned. Once Shaun recovered from homelessness, he launched his first international coaching system in 2012, which stretched across 22 countries. Later, he founded the Spencer Performance Institute, a performance training firm serving students, business owners, organizations, and neurodivergent performers across the United States and internationally. Shaun speaks at schools, universities, and corporate events on topics such as performance while having anxiety or ADHD, and adversity training for professionals. My Anxiety Made Me is his first book written specifically for the next generation of leaders, performers, and athletes. Shaun Spencer is based in the Los Angeles area.
